The walk

What is this walk like?

The Via Algarviana crosses the whole Algarve on foot, from the Guadiana on the Spanish border to Cape St Vincent, the south-western tip of Europe. This programme walks all fourteen sectors in order, through the Serra do Caldeirão, the barrocal villages of Salir and Alte, the old town of Silves, the Serra de Monchique and the open country around Vila do Bispo. The longest day, Silves to Monchique, is shortened at the Odelouca dam and finished by taxi.

We suggest it for the quieter months, October to April. December and January are walkable, with cooler weather, shorter days and green hills. There are no departures between 6 and 25 December, when several guesthouses on the route close. You stay in small, locally run houses and hotels, booked for you and subject to availability. Farol moves your bags every day and provides a digital guidebook with maps and GPX tracks, and a 24-hour support line is a phone call away.

  • Walk all 14 sectors of the Via Algarviana, from the Guadiana to Cape St Vincent
  • The Serra do Caldeirão: cork oak forest, remote valleys and mountain villages
  • Barrocal villages such as Salir and Alte, and the old town of Silves
  • The Serra de Monchique and the climb past Fóia
  • A finish at Cape St Vincent, the south-western tip of Europe
  • Quiet trails in the months from October to April

Is this walk right for you?

This is a long-distance walk, not a short break. Most days run 14 to 30 km on stony tracks, several with long climbs, and the sector grades run from II to V. Four days come close to 30 km. If you walk regularly and are comfortable with a full day on uneven ground, you will enjoy it. There are few shops or cafés on the trail, so you carry your lunch and water. Mobile coverage is patchy inland and the route relies on the GPX tracks in your guidebook. Winter days are short, so plan a prompt start each morning.
