The walk
What is this walk like?
This programme walks the Algarve end of the Fishermen's Trail, the coastal path of the Rota Vicentina, from Odeceixe on the border with the Alentejo to Vila do Bispo, close to the south-western tip of Portugal. Four stages, 70.6 km in all, follow cliff paths, beaches and river valleys inside the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.
Days run from 13.3 to 22.6 km. You spend two nights at Arrifana and one night in each of the other places, in locally run guesthouses and small hotels booked for you, subject to availability. Farol moves your bags, arranges the short taxi rides between Aljezur, Espartal and Arrifana, and provides a digital guidebook with maps and GPX tracks. A 24-hour support line is a phone call away.
- Walk four stages of the Fishermen's Trail above the Atlantic, 70.6 km in total
- Odeceixe beach, where the Seixe river meets the sea
- Praia da Amoreira and its estuary, a good place to watch herons and waders
- Ponta da Atalaia and the cliffs above Arrifana bay, with the 12th-century ribat on the headland
- Wild beaches between Carrapateira and Vila do Bispo, such as Amado and Murração
- Locally run guesthouses and small hotels, booked for you, subject to availability

Is this walk right for you?
This is a coastal walk with four full walking days in a row and no rest day. Distances run from 13.3 to 22.6 km a day on cliff path, sand and farm track, with about 300 m of climbing on the hilliest day. The first stage is graded difficult and the other three moderate. If you walk regularly and are steady on uneven ground, you will enjoy it. The Fishermen's Trail runs high and close to the cliff edge on every section. It is not recommended if you suffer from vertigo or a fear of heights, and children need close supervision. The inland Historical Way is available as an alternative route on request.
