The Rota Vicentina is a network of waymarked trails along the Alentejo and Vicentina coast of southwest Portugal, with around 750 km of walking. Its two long routes are the Fishermen's Trail (226.5 km, on the clifftops above the Atlantic) and the Historical Way (263 km, inland through cork oak and villages), plus 24 circular day routes.

Walking the Fishermen's Trail above the Atlantic

What the walking is like

Soft sand, salt air, and a lot of sky

The Fishermen's Trail is the wild one. You walk on sand and clifftop paths with the Atlantic on one shoulder, past storks nesting on sea stacks and the smell of cistus and salt on the wind. It is the harder underfoot, and the most beautiful.

The Historical Way inland is gentler and greener, through cork oak, eucalyptus and small whitewashed villages where lunch is whatever the kitchen made that morning. Most walkers do a stretch of one, or weave the two together.

The route

The Fishermen's Trail, stage by stage

The most-walked stretch is the northern Fishermen's Trail, four coastal stages from Porto Covo south to Odeceixe along the Alentejo coast. It then continues into the Algarve toward Lagos.

    start

A whitewashed fishing village, the northern trailhead.

  2. Vila Nova de Milfontes

    16.5–19.5 km

Sandy beaches, dunes and the Ilha do Pessegueiro, where the Mira river meets the sea.

  3. Almograve

    12–15 km

A boat-taxi crosses the Mira estuary; coastal vegetation, farmland and old quarries.

  4. Zambujeira do Mar

Cliff-backed beaches and the heart of the Vicentina coast.

  5. Odeceixe

    end of the Alentejo stages

A river beach on the Alentejo–Algarve border; the trail continues south to Lagos.
