Rota Vicentina · Fishermen's Trail
The trail that put southwest Portugal on the walking map.
The Fishermen's Trail follows the Atlantic coast from Porto Covo in the Alentejo south to Lagos in the Algarve. Around 60 to 70 percent of the route is on sand, beaches, dune paths, and cliff-top tracks worn by fishermen who once used them to reach their boats below. It is that specific texture, gritty, physical, oceanic, that defines the experience.
The trail runs through the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentina Coast Natural Park, one of the last stretches of Atlantic coastline in Western Europe where development has been actively restricted. The result is a coast that still looks like a coast: no beachfront hotels, no promenades, no franchise cafés at the viewpoints. Just the path, the cliff, and the water below.
Farol Discover is a certified partner of the Rota Vicentina association. We are listed on the official partner network as an operator with direct expertise on this trail. When you book with us, you book with a team that walks this route, not one that has added it to a catalogue.
Condé Nast Traveler has named it one of the six most beautiful coastal trails in the world (as cited by the Rota Vicentina association). We would not disagree, but you should walk it and decide for yourself.
Thirteen stages. Roughly two weeks on foot. The northern section through the Alentejo feels raw and elemental, wide beaches, hardly anyone around. The southern Algarve section gets more dramatic as you go, building to Cape St. Vincent and finishing with the sea caves and natural arches near Lagos. One of the finest long-distance walks in Western Europe.

The Alentejo Coast
Stages 1–4 · ~79 km
This is the original Fishermen's Trail, the stretch that put the route on the map. Four days of walking from Porto Covo south to Odeceixe through a landscape that has genuinely not changed much.
The path alternates between long sandy beaches, cliff-top tracks, and dune crossings where the only orientation is the sound of the waves. Highlights include the island of Ilha do Pessegueiro off Porto Covo, the estuary crossing at Vila Nova de Milfontes (by boat-taxi or on foot via the bridge, both work), Cape Sardão lighthouse at Stage 3, and the crossing of the Seixe River at Odeceixe, which marks the boundary between the Alentejo and the Algarve.
The terrain is consistently sandy throughout. Good conditions, but your legs will know about it by the end of the day.

The Algarve Coast
Stages 5–11 · 138 km
South of Odeceixe, the landscape shifts. The Algarve coast is rockier and more dramatic: cliffs get higher, the geology becomes more varied. Aljezur is a quiet town worth a stop. Stage 6 climbs to a medieval fortress and passes 12th-century Islamic ruins at Arrifana.
Stage 7 (Arrifana to Carrapateira) is tide-dependent, the coastal route is only passable at low tide. Our programmes include a Historical Way alternative for this stage. More on that below.
Stage 9 takes you through Cape St. Vincent, Europe's southwesternmost point. The lighthouse stands above the cape. On a clear day the view west to the open Atlantic puts the scale of the walk into perspective.
Stage 10 (Sagres to Salema) is the most challenging and most beautiful stage on the trail: constant elevation changes, unusual rock formations, and remains of a Roman ceramic workshop and an 18th-century fortress. The final stage into Lagos passes Ponta da Piedade, the sea caves and natural arches that most people only see from a boat. You walk past them.

What Makes Our Programmes Different
Every Fishermen's Trail programme we run is designed around the reality of walking this trail — not an itinerary template.
Historical Way day included
Every programme includes at least one stage on the Historical Way — the inland trail through cork oak forests. A complete contrast to the coastal path, and consistently one of the best days of the trip.
Luggage transfers daily
Leave your bag at reception by 9am. It arrives at the next accommodation before you do. You walk with a day pack only.
Small groups — max 12
All guided programmes run with a maximum of 12 participants. You get the trail, not a convoy.
Stage 7 alternative built in
Stage 7 is tide-dependent on the coastal route. Our programmes schedule the Historical Way alternative — more practical and, frankly, excellent.
All transfers arranged
Airport transfers, trailhead logistics, inter-stage transfers — all arranged as part of the programme, using local providers.
Rota Vicentina certified partner

Practical Information
When to Walk
September to June. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best windows — mild temperatures, wildflowers in spring, stable weather in autumn. July and August not recommended: temperatures regularly exceed 30°C on exposed coastal paths.
Getting There
Porto Covo (northern start) is approximately 2–2.5 hours from Lisbon airport by road. Faro airport serves the southern section, approximately 2 hours to Odeceixe. We arrange all airport and trailhead transfers as part of the programme.
Fitness Level
The official difficulty rating is 'somewhat difficult'. That is accurate. 13–23 km per day on sand, cliff paths, and uneven ground is genuine physical effort. You need to be comfortable walking 4–6 hours a day on consecutive days. Properly broken-in hiking boots are not optional.
Luggage Transfers
Leave your bags at accommodation reception by 9am each morning. They arrive at your next accommodation before you do. Luggage transfer between stage accommodations is included in every programme. You walk with a day pack only.
Frequently Asked Questions
The trail is officially rated 'somewhat difficult' by the Rota Vicentina. Roughly 60–70% of the terrain is sandy. Daily stages range from 11 to 22.5 km. You need a reasonable level of fitness and should be comfortable walking 4–6 hours a day on consecutive days. The trail is not recommended for people with vertigo — cliff-edge sections in the southern stages are exposed.
